View data lineage for both technical assets and business assets. Among business assets, you can view data lineage for Data Set and System assets. Among technical assets, you can view data lineage for technical data sets and data elements.
To view data lineage for an asset, browse or search for the technical asset or a business asset for which you want to see the data lineage. Click the asset to open the asset details page, and go to the Lineage tab to view the data lineage for the asset. You can view additional details about each asset in the lineage either by hovering over the asset or by clicking the Show Preview icon.
The following image displays the technical lineage for a column asset with the asset tooltip and the preview pane highlighted:
When you hover over an asset, the asset tooltip appears which displays details of the asset such as the asset type icon, the hierarchy path of the asset, business name, business description, rating if the asset is rated, the certified icon if the asset is certified, and the lifecycle of the asset. The header of the asset tooltip displays actions that the user can take depending on the selected asset type. For instance, you can add or edit filter for data sets, isolate path and highlight path for all assets.
If you click the Show Preview icon, the preview pane appears on the right and displays more details about the asset, such as the data quality score of the asset, the profiling stats, the stakeholders of the asset, and the related assets.
More lineage options
You can take more actions on the lineage to refine it further and to view more business context for the assets in the lineage. The Lineage page has the following options:
•Filters. You can select an asset and add filters to drill down to the child assets of the selected asset. The header of the asset tooltip displays options to add or edit filter. If you select a table asset from the lineage, you can add filters to view the columns that constitute the table. Similarly, if you select a system asset from the lineage, you can add filters to view the data sets that constitute the system.
The following image displays the tooltip for a sample table asset and shows the Filter option on the header.
Once you add the filter, you can also edit the filter to modify your existing view. The following image displays the tooltip for a sample table asset and shows the Edit Filter option on the header.
•Overlays. Click the Overlays icon from the Lineage options section to see the Overlays menu. Overlays add business context for the assets in the lineage and are grouped into different categories, such as Glossary, Business Impact, Data Quality and Others. The Glossary, Business Impact and Data Quality overlays are displayed as individual groups on the lineage. Whereas, the overlays in the Others category are displayed as inline overlays within each asset node.
If the Data Marketplace Administrator has connected Data Marketplace to Data Governance and Catalog, the Overlays menu displays the Data Marketplace overlay. You can use the Data Marketplace overlay to see the assets that are added to one or more data collections in Data Marketplace, including the assets that are added to unpublished data collections. For more information about how a Data Marketplace Administrator connects Data Marketplace to Data Governance and Catalog, see the Set Up Data Marketplace help in Data Marketplace. For more information about data collections, see the Working With Data Collections help in Data Marketplace.
The Glossary business term and Data Quality completeness overlays, highlighted in blue, are applied as separate groups on the lineage. The business name overlay from the Others category, highlighted in red, is displayed within each asset node.
The following image shows the Overlays menu and the overlays applied on the lineage of a sample table asset:
You can apply the Sensitivity overlay to display icons depicting the sensitivity of data elements on the asset node. The color of the sensitivity icon varies based on the sensitivity level.
The following image displays the Sensitivity icon for data elements on the Lineage tab:
If a data element is associated with any data element classification and glossary assets, you can view the details of the data element classifications and the associated glossary assets when you hover over the Sensitivity and Calculation Expression icons.
The following image shows the tooltip for a data element classification associated with the data element level lineage:
•Settings. Click the Settings icon to select one of the following options to optimize lineage performance and to load large lineages faster:
- View Loops. This option removes repeated assets and repeated paths in the data flow so that you can see the relationships in loops in the lineage.
- View data flow lines for all data elements. This option is applicable only for data element level lineage. Select this option to view data flow across all data elements in the lineage.
The following image displays the Settings menu where the View Loops option is selected and you can see the assets connected through loops.
•Save Layout. You can save settings and overlays that you apply to a data set or a data element level lineage. This preserves your overlay settings when you view the asset lineage next time. You can also save your preferences to show or hide a preview pane.
The following image displays the Save Layout option:
•Reset Layout. You can reset your layout preference to the following settings:
- Reset to Default Layout. Reset your layout preference to default settings.
- Reset to Last Saved Layout. Reset your layout preference to the last saved layout.
The following image displays the Reset Layout menu along with the Reset to Default Layout and Reset to Last Saved Layout options:
•Search. You can use the search bar to search for assets across all pages in all the expanded hops in the lineage. When you search for an asset, the search displays the total number of matches on the current page and highlights the matching nodes along with the page numbers where other matches can be found. You can navigate through the search and click the highlighted page number to see the total number of matches on that page.
If you have applied overlays on the lineage, you can run a search on overlays too. For example, if you have applied Glossary Business Term or Business Name overlays, you can search for assets in the lineage using a business term or a business name. The search highlights the overlays containing the matching business term or business name. The search result returns the total number of matches on the current page and you can navigate through the search.
•Export. Click the Action menu to export the lineage to your computer as a .PNG, .PDF, or .SVG file.
•Show Legend. On the Action menu, click this option to show the legend to help you interpret the assets participating in the lineage and distinguish between different types of lineages in the lineage diagram. The following image shows the Show Legend option:
