Associate business names and descriptions with technical assets

For better governance of technical assets, you can assign meaningful business names and descriptions to technical assets. Business names make the technical assets meaningful, readable, and identifiable.
You can enable automatic assignment of business names and descriptions to technical assets, or you can manually add business names to technical assets.
If you want to associate business names and descriptions to technical assets, the following guidelines apply:

Automatically assign business names and descriptions

You can automatically assign meaningful business names and descriptions to technical assets to enhance clarity and governance.
Configuration in Metadata Command Center
To automatically assign business names and descriptions, the administrator must enable the following options in Metadata Command Center.
In Metadata Command Center, you can also specify whether you want to assign business names and descriptions only to the assets that don't already have them or assign to all assets. If you choose the latter option, the system overwrites the existing business names and descriptions. By default, the system assigns business names only to the assets that don't already have them. For more information about the glossary association configuration settings, see the Administration help in Metadata Command Center.
Behavior in Data Governance and Catalog
When you open the Overview tab for a technical asset in the catalog source in Data Governance and Catalog, all glossary assets that match or exceed the specified confidence score are automatically accepted and appear in the Accepted list.
The name and description of the accepted glossary asset is automatically assigned to the associated technical asset. If multiple glossary assets are accepted with the same confidence score, the name and description of the asset that appears first in alphabetical order is assigned to the associated technical asset.
Automatic synchronization of glossary updates to technical assets
When you link a technical asset to a glossary asset so that the technical asset obtains its name and description from the glossary asset, Data Governance and Catalog can automatically update the technical asset details if the name or description of the glossary asset changes.
Glossaries associated before November, 2025
For glossaries associated with technical assets before November, you have to perform a one-time activity for all technical assets in catalog source to enable the synchronization of the glossary name and descriptions with technical assets.
To enable the synchronization, navigate to the Glossary Association tab of the catalog source in Metadata Command Center and update the following configurations:
  1. 1Set Assign Business Names and Descriptions to Yes .
  2. 2Disable the Keep Existing Business Names and Descriptions toggle.
  3. 3Re-execute the glossary association job in the catalog source.
  4. Image showing a catalog source with an option to enable glossary association. The Keep Existing Business Names and Descriptions toggle is disabled.
If the glossaries were assigned manually through UI or bulk import to technical data elements, to automatically update the business name and description, you should perform the following actions:
  1. 1Export the assets
  2. 2Set the Automatic Assignment column value to Enabled
  3. 3Verify the values in the Glossary:Accepted and Business Name columns
  4. 4Reimport the file to trigger glossary synchronization
Note:
Subsequent updates to glossary assets will automatically update the associated technical assets.

Manually assign business names and descriptions

You can manually assign business names that are specific to your organization and descriptions to technical assets in Data Governance and Catalog. To do this, you can either directly modify a technical asset or manually assign a business name and description while associating glossary assets with the technical asset. For more information about how you can associate glossaries with technical assets, see Curate glossaries for technical assets.
To assign a business name directly to a technical asset, open the technical asset and click the edit icon next to the name of the asset on the header of the page.
