Usage types

A usage type defines the contexts within which an individual can use data. Stakeholders can utilize usage types to specify the intended use of their data collections. Data Users can utilize usage types to cite their intention when they order a collection. Use the Marketplace - Usage Type Template.xlsx file or upload your own Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to create usage types in Data Marketplace.

Prerequisites

Before you can create usage types, verify one of the following prerequisites:

Column description

The following table describes the fields in the Marketplace - Usage Type Template.xlsx file and the values that you can enter:
Field
Description
Example
Reference ID
Enter a reference identifier for the usage type.
Field Type: Free text; optional
Guidelines: If you don't specify a reference identifier, Data Marketplace automatically assigns a unique value to the object.
If you want to specify a reference identifier, enter a unique alphabetical, numeric or alphanumeric value. You can also use special characters when you enter a reference identifier value. Ensure that the value that you enter doesn’t use a prefix value that is configured in Metadata Command Center.
For more information about reference IDs, see the Manage reference IDs of objects topic in the Set Up Data Marketplace help.
You can specify UType01 or UT-1 as the reference ID of a usage type. However, if USG- is a reference ID prefix that is configured in your Metadata Command Center, you cannot use USG-1.
Name
Enter a name for the usage type.
Field Type: Free text; required
Guidelines: The usage type names should clearly indicate the uses that they represent.

Description
Enter a description for the usage type.
Field Type: Free text; optional
Guidelines: Explain the nature of the usage type, so that an individual can determine whether it meets their requirements.
If you use a CSV file to upload usage types, do not enter commas in the description. Commas are used as column separators. Consider rephrasing the description to avoid commas.
The data in this collection is curated for sales analytics.
Status
Specify a status for the usage type. The status determines whether a usage type is available to be added to a data collection or to be selectable on an order or a data collection request.
Field Type: Fixed value; required
Enter one of the following values:
  • - To make the usage type available, set the status to ACTIVE.
  • - To make the usage type unavailable, set the status to INACTIVE.
Guidelines: Typically, the usage types that you create should be active for use. If you are creating inactive usage types, ensure that you have a valid reason for doing so, or you can create the usage types later.

Color
Specify a color indicator for the usage type.
Field Type: Free text; optional
Guidelines: Assigning a unique color indicator allows users to identify a usage type easily.
