Configure workflows

You can create workflows that services like Data Governance and Catalog can implement when users want to create or modify assets.
A workflow specifies a series of predefined steps that a service follows when a user attempts to create or modify an asset, and includes the stakeholders that must be involved in providing inputs for the change process. Each step is a task that a stakeholder of the asset must perform. A workflow ensures that the right people have the opportunity to provide inputs, challenge, and approve matters related to the asset that is created or modified.
Metadata Command Center allows you to configure both predefined and custom workflows. A predefined workflow uses a predefined process provided by Informatica as it is without modifications. A custom workflow uses a business process that you can design based on your organization's needs.
Custom workflows help you design multi-step approval processes with Application Integration. Workflows leverage the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) infrastructure in Application Integration.
To use workflows, perform the following high-level steps:
  1. 1Design processes in Application Integration that suit your organizational needs. Informatica also provides predefined processes in Application Integration that you can use instead of designing your own process.
  2. 2Configure workflows with these processes in Metadata Command Center.
  3. 3Trigger workflows when you work with assets in Data Governance and Catalog.
A human intervention becomes necessary in business processes where a decision needs to be taken. For example, a human action is required for approvals. You can create human tasks to be included in business processes in Application Integration.
A gateway represents a control point in a process. It performs two tasks: join sequence flows together or split them into multiple paths. A gateway can play either role or both roles at the same time. The joins and splits are accomplished by incoming and outgoing links.
Processes that you add to custom workflows can include human tasks in the following gateway types:
Workflows that have multiple human tasks have multiple approvers.
Important: After the November 2023 upgrade, you must reconfigure your workflows in Metadata Command Center. You must cancel all open tickets and reconfigure workflows using any published process. To configure workflows after you upgrade, you can use predefined processes that Informatica provides. Over time, you can build your own processes.
