You can design workflows and configure workflow events that services like Data Governance and Catalog can implement when users create or modify assets.
A workflow specifies a series of predefined steps that a service follows when a user attempts to create or modify an asset, and includes the stakeholders that must be involved in providing inputs for the change process. Each step is a task that a stakeholder of the asset must perform. A workflow ensures that the right people have the opportunity to provide inputs, challenge, and approve matters related to the asset that is created or modified.
A workflow determines the business process to be followed and workflow events determine the events that trigger the workflow and the user roles that can participate in the workflow.
Effective in the April 2025 release, the usage of Application Integration processes to configure workflows in Metadata Command Center is deprecated.
Deprecated functionality is supported, but Informatica intends to drop support in a future release. Informatica requests that you transition to different functionality before the functionality is dropped.
As part of the April 2025 release, Informatica leverages the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) infrastructure that allows you to design multi-step approval workflows in Metadata Command Center. You can design workflows that suit your organizational needs and configure events for the workflows in Metadata Command Center.
Human intervention becomes necessary in business processes where a decision needs to be taken. For example, a human action is required for approvals. The workflows start when you work with assets in Data Governance and Catalog. When a user attempts to create or modify an asset, Data Governance and Catalog creates a ticket for the approval process. This ticket starts the workflow associated with the asset and involves the relevant stakeholders in the process.
For more information about working with workflow tickets in Data Governance and Catalog, see Workflows and tickets.
You can choose to use predefined workflows or configure custom workflows. A predefined workflow uses a predefined business process provided by Informatica that you can't modify. A custom workflow uses a business process that you design based on your organization's needs.
To use workflows, perform the following high-level steps:
1Design and publish workflows in Metadata Command Center that suit your organizational needs or use the predefined workflows provided by Informatica.
2Configure workflow events with the designed workflows in Metadata Command Center.
3Create or modify assets in Data Governance and Catalog to create tickets.
Important: After you upgrade to the April 2025 release, you need to redesign the custom Application Integration processes in Metadata Command Center. You can use predefined workflows that Informatica provides or build your own workflows.
Informatica will continue to support the existing workflow tickets and tasks that are available in Data Governance and Catalog until the next major release.
You can perform the following tasks until the next major release:
•Update and close tickets that were created using the Application Integration workflows.
•Continue to use events that were configured with the Application Integration workflows.
•View new workflow tasks in the Tasks Inbox page and old workflow tasks in the Workflow Inbox page in Data Governance and Catalog. Notifications from the previous Application Integration workflows will take you to the Workflow Inbox page and new workflow notifications will take you to the new Tasks Inbox page.
