Configure a service principal

Configure a service principal so that the Microsoft Fabric catalog source can extract metadata from Microsoft Fabric. The service principal extracts metadata on behalf of your organization, without a personal administrator account.
Configure the service principal in Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Fabric before you create the Microsoft Fabric catalog source.
Verify that you have the following access:
1Create an app registration in the Microsoft Entra admin center.
    1. aGo to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
    2. bSelect App registrations > New registration.
    3. cEnter a name for the app, and then complete the registration.
    4. For example, name the app Informatica metadata app.
    5. dFrom the app overview page, record the Application (client) ID and Directory (tenant) ID values.
    6. You need both values later.
2Create a client secret for the app.
    1. aOn the same app, go to Certificates & secrets.
    2. bSelect New client secret, enter a description and an expiry, and then create the secret.
    3. cCopy the secret value and store it securely.
    4. The value appears only once. You can't retrieve it later.
3Turn on Fabric API access for service principals.
    1. aLog in to the Fabric admin portal as a Fabric Administrator, and then select Tenant settings.
    2. bGo to Developer settings.
    3. cFind the Service principals can call Fabric public APIs setting.

    1. aIn the same admin portal, select Tenant settings.
    2. bGo to Admin API settings.
    3. cFind the Service principals can access read-only admin APIs setting, and then turn it on for a security group or the entire organization.
    4. dFind the Enhance admin APIs responses with detailed metadata setting, and then turn it on the same way.
    5. eFind the Enhance admin APIs responses with DAX and mashup expressions setting, and then turn it on the same way.
5Add the app to each workspace that you want to extract metadata from.
    1. aOpen each workspace.
    2. bGo to Manage access > Add people or groups.
    3. cSearch for the app by the name that you gave it, and then add it.
    4. dSet the app role to Contributor.
6Grant the app access to the capacity.
    1. aIn the same admin portal, go to Capacity settings.
    2. bSelect the capacity that your workspaces use.
    3. cGo to Manage access, and then add the app.
The service principal can extract metadata from the Microsoft Fabric workspaces and capacity that you granted it access to. You can now use the service principal when you configure the Microsoft Fabric catalog source.
