Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence tool that allows you to connect data and create dashboards that can be shared.

Objects Extracted

The Microsoft Power BI resource extracts metadata from the following assets in a Microsoft Power BI data source:

Permissions to Configure the Resource

You need a user account with Power BI administrator privileges.
Note: Because of the constraint that the Microsoft Power BI Admin REST API imposes, you need a user account with Power BI administrator privileges.
In the Azure Active Directory, configure the read permission and the following API permissions on the registered application for the Power BI service:

Prerequisites

Before you create a Power BI resource, perform the following steps:
  1. 1. Create an Azure Active Directory tenant.
  2. Note: You can use an existing tenant if it is configured in the Azure Active Directory.
For more information about creating a new tenant in the Azure Active Directory, see the Microsoft documentation.
  3. 2. Create a new user in the Azure Active Directory or use an existing Azure Active Directory user.
  4. 3. Assign the Power BI administrator privileges to the new or existing Azure Active Directory user.
  5. For more information about assigning Power BI administrator privileges, see the Microsoft documentation.
  6. 4. Register the application in Azure Active Directory to access the Microsoft Power BI content. Use the client ID received to create the Power BI resource.
  7. Note: To register an application in the Azure Active Directory, the user account must have the Application administrator privileges.
For more information about registering an application in Azure Active Directory, see the Microsoft documentation.
  8. 5. Provide Microsoft Power BI Service API permissions to the application, and grant access to all the Power BI Service APIs.
  9. 6. Select the new or existing Azure Active Directory user as the owner of the application.
  10. 7. Set the Treat application as public client property to Yes in the registered application.
