A category is a grouping of related data collections. It is a predefined classification where stakeholders can publish their data collections.
On the New page, you can create new categories in Data Marketplace. For more information about how you can create new categories, see Creating categories.
Creating categories
Create a new category to collate all related data collections and data assets into a single group.
To perform this task, verify the following prerequisites:
•Your user profile is assigned one of the following roles:
- Category Owner
- Data Marketplace Administrator
•Your user profile is assigned a role for which the following privileges and permissions are enabled:
- Access Data Marketplace privilege is enabled in Administrator.
- Create, Manage Access, Read and Update permissions are enabled in Metadata Command Center for categories.
1Open the New page.
2On the New page, click the Category tile to create a new category.
3On the New Category page, configure the category properties.
The following table describes the properties of a category that you can configure on the New Category page:
Property
Description
Reference ID
Enter a reference identifier for the category.
If you don't specify a reference identifier, Data Marketplace automatically assigns a unique value to the item.
If you want to specify a reference identifier, enter a unique alphabetical, numeric or alphanumeric value. You can also use special characters when you enter a reference identifier value. Ensure that the value that you enter doesn’t use a prefix value that is configured in Metadata Command Center.
Select a status for the category. The status determines whether the category is available in Data Marketplace.
- To make the category available, set the status to Active.
- To make the category unavailable, set the status to Inactive.
Parent Category
Select a parent category for the category that you want to create.
If the category that you want to create isn't a subcategory to another category, you can leave this field empty.
Asset Groups
Select an asset group for the category.
Asset groups allow you to control access to the category, the subcategories and data collections within it. For more information, see Implement access controls on metadata.
Note: When you configure the category state, select a parent category or select an asset group, consider the following guidelines:
- If you set the Status to Active but select an effectively inactive parent category, the category becomes inactive. However, the Status field will continue to display the category state that you configured.
- Effectively inactive categories are not discoverable to Data Users on the Browse page. However, a Data User that received access to a data collection that later belonged to an effectively inactive category can still navigate from the Data I Use tab on the My Data page to the details page of the inactive category
- Data collections that belong to an effectively inactive category are not discoverable to Data Users on the Browse and Search pages.
- If you select an asset group before you specify a parent category and if the asset group that you selected is a child to another asset group, the Parent Category field displays only the categories that are within the selected asset group's parental hierarchy.
For example, consider a category US-Retail that is added to the asset group US-Personnel. The US-Personnel asset group contains 2 other categories and is a child of another asset group Global-Personnel that contains 8 categories. When you try assign a parent category to US-Retail, the Parent Category field will display only 10 categories from both the US-Personnel and Global-Personnel asset groups.
- If you select a parent category before you specify an asset group and if the parent category that you selected is already assigned an asset group, the Asset Groups field displays only the asset groups that are within the hierarchy of the parent category's asset group.
4In the Stakeholders section, click Add to specify the users that will be responsible for the new category and the data within it.
5In the Add Stakeholders dialog box, select a role, and then select the users or user groups that you want to assign as stakeholders of the category.
To remove a stakeholder, click the Delete icon next to the stakeholder that you want to remove from the Selected Stakeholders section.
Note: When you configure stakeholders for a category, consider the following:
- Ensure that the users that you want to add as the stakeholders of the category are already assigned the relevant user role in Administrator. For example, if you want to assign a user as a Category Owner of a category, the user must already be assigned the Category Owner user role in Administrator. Additionally, ensure that the relevant user role is configured as a stakeholder role for categories in Metadata Command Center. For more information, see Implement access controls on metadata.
- If you don't assign a stakeholder to the new category, you can modify the category after its creation only if you are a Data Marketplace Administrator or are assigned the Configure and Manage Data Marketplace privilege in Metadata Command Center.
6Click Save.
You can see the new category on the Browse page. You can also modify the category that you created. For more information about how you can modify a category, see Modifying categories.
Stakeholders can publish their data collections to your category. For more information about how stakeholders publish data collections to categories, see the Modifying data collections topic in the Working with Data Collections help.
Modifying categories
You can modify the summary of a category from the category page.
To perform this task, verify the following prerequisites:
•Your user profile is assigned the Data Marketplace Administrator role.
•You are either an inherited or specifically assigned stakeholder with the Category Owner stakeholder role on the category.
•You are assigned as a stakeholder on the category and your user profile is assigned a role for which the following privileges and permissions are enabled:
- Access Data Marketplace privilege is enabled in Administrator.
- Read and Update permissions are enabled in Metadata Command Center for categories.
1On the Browse page, select the category that you want to modify.
2On the category page, click Edit to modify the summary of category.

Select a parent category for the category that you want to modify.
If the category that you want to modify isn't a subcategory to another category, you can leave this field empty.
Asset Groups
Select an asset group for the category.
Asset groups allow you to control access to the category, the subcategories and data collections within it. For more information, see Implement access controls on metadata.
Note: If you modify the status, parent or asset group of a category, your changes may take some time to reflect on the Data Marketplace interface. While the system updates the category, you can't modify its properties any further. Additionally, you can't modify the properties of any category and data collections in its hierarchy.
Additionally, before you modify the category state, select a parent category or select an asset group, consider the following guidelines:
- If you set the Status to Active but select an effectively inactive parent category, the category becomes inactive. However, the Status field will continue to display the category state that you configured.
- If you set the Status to Inactive or select an effectively inactive parent category, the subcategories of the category that you modified become inactive.
- If you want to modify the parent category and if the category is assigned an asset group that is a child to another asset group, the Parent Category field displays only the categories that are within the selected asset group's parental hierarchy.
- If you want to modify the asset group and if the category is assigned a parent that is already added to an asset group, the Asset Groups field displays only the asset groups that are within the hierarchy of the parent category's asset group.
3Click Save.
